What happens when we slow down, look closely and start to understand the incredible creatures and habitats living right outside our front door?
Join Curious Kids for a morning of hands-on discovery in the Ginninderry Conservation Corridor, where science, art, storytelling and nature come together to explore the fascinating connections within our local environment.
We’re thrilled to welcome Billie Rooney, author of the beautiful and engaging children's book Creature Corridors. Billie's book has been nominated for the Wilderness Society Award for Children’s Literature, and she'll be joining us to share a special reading of Creature Corridors (see image below).
Billie's story provides the perfect introduction to exploring the idea of wildlife corridors - the important natural pathways that allow animals to move between habitats, find food and shelter, and maintain healthy populations as our towns and cities grow. We'll take these ideas outside and discover what they mean for the wildlife living in and around Ginninderry.
From there, we'll get up close with some of Australia's fascinating insects and lizards, learning how to observe them respectfully and discovering more about their behaviours, adaptations and important roles within the ecosystem.
We'll then head out into the Conservation Corridor for a guided nature walk, looking beyond simply identifying what we see. For this older age group, we'll dig deeper into the science - exploring habitats, food webs, camouflage, life cycles, biodiversity and the relationships between plants, animals and their environment.
Back at our activity space, we'll continue our investigations using microscopes, revealing tiny details that are normally invisible to the naked eye. We'll investigate natural specimens and discover how looking closely can completely change the way we understand the world around us.
And because discovery can be creative too, children will have the opportunity to make their own stick insect, explore educational nature-based colouring and observation activities, and use art as another way of understanding and remembering what they've discovered.
This experience is designed for curious young minds who are ready to look a little closer and dig a little deeper. Rather than simply learning about nature, we'll explore how everything is connected and why protecting even the small patches of habitat around us can make a big difference.
Conservation isn't just something that happens in distant national parks. It begins with noticing, understanding and caring for the natural world in our own backyard.
